A Love for the Wild
Wandering Fever was born out of a love for the wild and the ability to tell stories through still and motion pictures. Founded by South African creative, Dean Leslie.
“South African filmmaker Dean Leslie might not be a household name, but chances are you’ve seen his work. The 34-year-old is responsible for most of Salomon TV’s summer films and has been for the last seven years. His work has taken him to every continent, chasing down the world’s foremost endurance athletes and documenting the ways in which we interact with some of the world’s most stunning landscapes. A Cape Town resident who spends most of his time on the road, Leslie founded a production company, the African Attachment, with a friend in 2006 and helmed it successfully for ten years. Last year, he began making films under the name Wandering Fever, a new venture he created with his wife, Hannah Slezacek. His work is humane and expansive, addressing the struggles these athletes face with empathy but without drama, and exploring far-flung locales with curiosity but without blindly exoticizing foreign places and peoples. Most importantly, his films and photography make you want to get out and chase that elusive feeling of wonder.”
Wandering Fever is a culmination of nearly two decades of filmmaking and drifting around the globe. Dean has filmed on expeditions and assignments on all seven continents; From Hollywood style film sets to guerrilla style documentary projects in remote and rugged locations.
He was also the founder and owner of the independent film production company, The African Attachment but is probably most well-known for establishing the online short film series, Salomon Running TV (now Salomon TV), with French outdoor brand, Salomon.
Deans approach and love for the creative process sees him work in every aspect of the production process. His resulting creative works have accumulated over 20 million views online and have been showcased around the globe. In 2015 Dean was awarded a silver Loerie Award for his work as Creative Director on Salomon Running TV. He was the cinematographer for the ‘Interviews Unit’ on the Academy Award nominated feature film, ’District 9’ and in 2009 he edited the International short film, ‘Pumzi’, for Focus Features (USA) and Inspired Minority Pictures; Which won Best International Short at Cannes Independent Film Festival and was a favourite at the 2010 Sundance International Film Festival.
Dean is based in the deep south of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa.
Across The Globe
While we are based in Cape Town, South Africa, a large portion of our year is spent on the road. We operate in small remote teams and have completed assignments on every continent. From the windswept dunes of the Namib desert to the cold white emptiness of the Antarctic.
